Celebrating St. Patrick's Day

I woke up this morning excited to teach my kids about the original green holiday!  We put a pot roast in the crock pot, shredded some cabbage, printed some shamrock coloring pages, and did a little Internet digging.  So, I thought I'd share what we found.

St. Patrick info:
http://www.biography.com/st-patrick/st-patrick.jsp

http://www.history.com/topics/st-patricks-day

We are going to read the story of Joseph in the Old Testament as a parallel of another time God used a man in captivity to save His people.

Coloring pages and free printouts:

Finished by something fun and green for dessert!  I'll let my oldest have fun with that!

Have a blessed St. Patrick's Day and if you have fun ideas for this holiday please share!!!!

Tooth Brushing....should we regulate it?

My dear friend and fellow homeschool mom Liz wrote this analogy on homeschool regulation.  I really like it, but maybe that is because my Father-in-law is a dentist :)  Enjoy!

Parents.....Are you doing a good job taking care of your Children's Teeth?

Are they flossing regularly? How about plaque? Do they have a problem with plaque?

What brand of toothpaste are you using? Is that really the best for your children?

You do know they are going to Need their teeth when they get older?

Teeth are vital for chewing foods which Nourish the body.

Without teeth a child won't have the opportunity to try a variety of foods when they grow up.

You could be robbing them from life experiences such as snacking on nuts!

Wouldn't it be a good idea if a "Trained Dental Professional" came to your home to see if you're doing a good enough job with dental hygiene?...... For the sake of the children of course.

They can check the method you have chosen for brushing,

making sure it is in alignment with what THEY think is best for your children...... after all they are "Trained"!

They went to school, they have a Degree!

So they MUST know more than you! You, You are JUST the parent!

If the dental professional doesn't think you are practicing proper dental hygiene in your home with your children, they will then assign your family to another trained professional that will be able to assist you in better taking care of your children's teeth.

They will tell you the brand of toothpaste you must use, and visit periodically for a "checkup".

As long as you are following the guidelines, you are free to brush your own children's teeth.

However! If you do not comply, for example if you were to purchase a different brand of toothpaste, or skip a night of brushing.....etc.

they will then have the authority to take your dental care rights away....

because it's better for the children.

You will send your children each day to have their teeth brushed and flossed by a Trained Professional.

(This will also give them the opportunity to socialize with other Dental Patients! =)

Your children will grow up into well rounded adults with the Guarantee of Healthy Teeth!

This ridiculous dental care analogy is just as ridiculous as the Homeschooling residents in Illinois needing to register with our local school district so they can keep track of the children being homeschooled!

This week Pastor James McDonald met with Sen. Maloney of Illinois to discuss SB136 .

He had this to say......

"Sen. Maloney opened the discussion with a presentation of why he thought the bill was needed. His reasoning was that since the State was responsible for the education of our children, the State should know who was being homeschooled."

(Really? Since when is the state responsible for OUR children's education?!?!?)

"I tried to help Sen. Maloney see that in the eyes of most home educators, the responsibility to ensure our children receive a competent education belonged to parents, not the State."

This bill would open up a lot of doors that the government has NO business entering!

If you live in Illinois, I urge you to call and voice your opinion about Senate Bill 0136.

(Only if you oppose it of course! =)

I love having the Freedom to teach my own kids in my own home.

And I Love getting a paper turned in like the one I saw this afternoon.

"Mommy, since it's almost ValentiMes day...I drew you hearts instead of letters today." ~ Sophia

(Of course we did go over the letters. ;)

Thankfully we serve a Mighty God.

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose." ~ Romans 8:28

Proposed Bill SB 136

The proposed bill for IL, SB 136, will effect only homeschoolers and will require us (not private schools) to register with the State.  As many of us understand, this is a slippery slope to govt. requirements of a greater nature like evaluations, testing, and reports.  The bill is in committee and will have a hearing next Tues. in Springfield, IL.  So, what can your family do to help secure our current homeschool freedoms?

If you are able to attend the hearing, please do.

Call your representatives and tell them you "oppose" the bill and hope they will too.

Pray for God's favor in securing our freedom to homeschool without govt. involvement, for our concerns to be heard, and the bill to be tabled.

We can also pray for the leaders on both sides of the issue to communicate well and listen to each other and for homeschooling to gain momentum as parents answer the call to educate their children at home.

ICHE's Legislative Task Force invites you to attend our Homeschool Freedom Summit!

February 15, 2011
Please join us for our Homeschool Freedom Summit!

Illinois Christian Home Educators has organized a Homeschool Freedom Summit meeting from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. on February 15 to help us all prepare for the 10:45 a.m. hearing on the homeschool registration bill.

All homeschoolers are invited to attend all or part of the Summit if possible! The address is the Howlett Building, 501 South 2d St., Springfield, Il. From there it is easy walking distance to the Capitol building.Important information will be communicated during the Summit.

Since it will occur inside the Howlett auditorium, indoor standards of decorum should be observed (i.e., no signs, no posters, no boisterous activities--it's not a "rally".)

This would be an excellent opportunity to bring well-behaved children to learn first-hand about the legislative process. Your children need to know that the protection of freedom requires help from everyone!

One or two people have asked if the date and time of the hearing has changed. The answer is no. It is still scheduled for 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, February 15. Another bill Sen. Maloney is sponsoring, SB 1226, is set for a hearing on February 16, but it does not pertain to homeschooling.
Thank you for standing with us for freedom!

A message from IFI:

IFI Update: Hearing for SB 136 Set for Next Week

By David E. Smith, IFI Executive Director -Illinois Family Institute

State Senator Edward Maloney's SB 136 has been scheduled for a hearing on Tuesday, February 15th at 10:45 in the morning. It will be held in the Capitol Building, in room 212.

As you know, this bill will mandate parents of non-public school students to register their children with the State Board of Education. This bill would affect students who are privately or home educated. Yet it is interesting to note that the official Hearing Notice for the Education Committee has listed "Registration of Home Schooled Students in Illinois" as the subject matter for this hearing. Senator Maloney may move to amend SB 136, removing the reference to "private schools" and only require "home school" parents to register their children with the local Regional Office of Education instead of the State Board of Education. This would make the bill even more problematic. Public school administrators and bureaucrats should have NO jurisdiction over homeschooling families -- PERIOD. Furthermore, where is the MONEY going to come from to MANAGE this new bureaucracy?

TAKE ACTION: JOIN US! If you are able to attend this hearing meeting, I want to encourage you to join me and dozens of other small-government, freedom loving, school choice citizens and families in a show of strength. It would great if we could pack the hearing room with concerned citizens and homeschooling families.

MORE ACTION: If you have not yet called the members of the Senate Education Committee -- please do so before Tuesday. Ask them to oppose this bill and encourage Sen. Maloney to table it (withdraw it). You can also click HERE to send Sen. Maloney and each of the committee members a fax or an email. (You may want to do both!)
